"There is a young soldier (a 23 year old Tennessee National Guardsman) named Sgt. Kevin Downs. He was blown out of his tank in Baghdad a year ago and left with no feet, mangled arms, and burns over 60% of his body. He is a Tennessee boy. Everyone else in the tank was killed.
His condition is not good. A surgery to improve the use of fingers on one hand inadvertently caused previous skin grafts to break down, and the grafts on his legs are cracking as well and may require beginning over at square one."

"Kevin is tired and low in spirits. He needs our prayers and support through cards. Would you please send him a note or card to let him know you are thinking about him? Remember him in your prayers as well."

"Now I am going to ask a special favor from me. Would you please send this to as many people that you can in your e-mail addresses?
I would love to see him get cards from everywhere and hopefully he will know that people all over the country appreciate him leaving the safety of his home and country and fighting for our freedoms.I love America and know that it could very well be one of my family members.
Thank you for all that you will do."

Kevin Downs Update
By DALE GRAHAM
There is some very encouraging news coming out of BAMC about our Sgt. Downs. It seems that Kevin may have turned the corner and is making some very positive strides.
Doctors reported to Joe and Catherine this week that they are working with Kevin to get him back into "lower extremity prosthetics so he can stand up". This is something that they gave up on a while back, because Kevin's skin is so tender because of the burn damage, and it has a tendency to break down under the pressure of prosthetics. But it's something that Kevin wants, so the doctors are being supportive, even if he can only stand or walk for brief periods.
He is also making progress with range of motion in both hands, especially the right.
Perhaps the best news is that Kevin is asking doctors to get him off some of the pain medications he has had to take for so l ong. They say he is not taking much pain medicine anymore and doing much better as a result.
So prayers are answered and progress is being made.

Donations Needed for Landstuhl Outpatients - Please Help Us Support Your Soldiers!

The Soldiers' Angels have adopted the Combat Support Hospitals in Iraq and all the Military hospitals worldwide.

Soldiers' Angels Germany supports the patients at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, which includes the outpatient barracks at Kleber. LRMC receives injured and ill soldiers on a daily basis, who often arrive wearing the uniforms in which they were wounded.

Receiving needed items as donations from everyday Americans via Soldiers´ Angels volunteers provides a level of personal support that has a very positive impact on a patient´s morale, and therefore on the recovery process.

"A lot of the guys here are hurting. But when we see all that stuff... and know that people have sent it, and that other people have put it out her e for us, it makes us feel really good."
- Soldier at Kleber

For the Kleber outpatient barracks we are currently requesting donations of:
  • Shower Gel
  • Toothbrushes & Toothpaste
  • Mouthwash
  • Deoderant
  • FlipFlops to wear while showering (large sizes)
  • Knit or fleece caps
  • Small stuffed animals
  • Microwaveable meals, snacks, fruit cups (Soldiers often arrive at Kleber from Iraq or Afghanistan in the evenings after regular meal hours)

Please send items to:

21st TSC, Medical Transient Detachment
ATTN: Soldiers' Angels
UNIT 23203
APO AE 09263

Important:
- Include a card with your name, Email address, and short description of items sent in your packages. Without this information, we will be unable to confirm their receipt.

All donations are delivered directly through Willie or MaryAnn to Landstuhl hospital and Kleber Barracks.

Please help support our wounded and ill Heroes! Thank you.

E-Mail From A Soldier
Each time I talk to someone at home, they ask me what the soldiers need or what they want. I observe the fact that we really do have everything we need here, however the other day we received many large boxes filled with various items for the soldiers of the 65th PAOC. These boxes were from a Rhode Island Boy Scout who took the time to fill them and mail them to us as part of a scout project.

Right next to where we work is the Iraqi assistance center. This is a location where Iraqis come to for help with various "needs" items. While waiting in hour long lines we allow these people to eat the remaining food (after the soldiers have had their meals) and everytime the women feed their children first. Sometimes there is not enough food for the women and all they have is water.

I asked our translator what we could do to help the families here in Iraq and he told me that items for the children would be appreciated. Item s such as cl othing ( no US flag on it) toys, soccer balls, footballs, socks, T shirts book bags etc....

So I am asking you since it is the end of the summer before you put away clothes that you may not even need next year why don't you plan on sending them to me and I will insure that they are distributed through out Iraq for the children through this organization.

Thanks

Hello everyone. I'm sending you this email because I wanted to let our MCFSC family and friends know that our son, Cpl Zac Orem was in a terrible auto accident over the Labor Day weekend outside of San Diego. Thankfully, Joe and I were already out west and able to get to him later the day of the accident. He and two other Marines were driving the early morning hours of Sept. 1, from Pendleton to Phoenix to see a couple of Marine friends over the weekend. Somewhere in the desert en route, the driver lost control of her SUV and it rolled several times. Neither the driver or Zac (who was asleep in the backseat) had on seat belts and were thrown from the vehicle. The other passenger (who was engaged to the driver) had a belt on and didn't get injured at all was able to call 911 following the accident and both an ambulance and life flight were brought in and took them to a trauma hospital in San Diego.Zac was thrown approximately 50 ft and broke his pelvis in 3 places and has fractures around his right eye. Amazingly, they don't to surgery for any of these fractures! He spent several days i n the hospital and then was released to Camp Pendleton where he is now under their care. The doctors say that it'll just take lots of time for the bones to heal and he is in the barracks for rest for the next 30 days. Unfortunately, because of the nature of his pelvic injuries he is in severe pain and unable to travel so he can't come home for us to keep him company. They have assigned the passenger who wasn't injured to be his buddy and help get him what he needs. Beginning early October Zac will begin extensive rehab that will take several months. They do expec t him to make a full recovery. He's already able to walk with crutches. The Marine who was driving the vehicle is extremely critical with several broken limbs, head trauma and bleeding in the brain, and doesn't face very good odds and may not live. We are all praying for her and her family. I'm not sure of her rank but her name is Brittany Hutchins.Zac is pretty depressed about his friend and is so immobile that I'm sure would appreciate a card or two. He had returned to Pendleton in February after being in Iraq for a full year. Yesterday was supposed to have been his separation date after having served his four years. He was moving back to Columbus to start college. Now, they have extended him for a minimum of 6 months so that the Marines can provide the care he needs.Zac's address is:

I run the Minnesota-based Military Salute Project. My group is sponsoring the 2008 Minnesota Veterans Literary Initiative, an effort to begin recording the stories of Minnesotans who have served in the Global War On Terror. More information is available here ...

http://home.att.net/~militarysalute2/

An important part of this effort is to have Americans from all over the country send us messages we can post to thank Minnesota Veterans and those currently serving. This is where my brother and sister PGR members can help us.

Anyone who would like to write a message to Minnesota Veterans, Servicemembers, Reservists, Minnesota Army and Air National Guard troops, and their families are encouraged to do so. You do not have to be a Minnesota resident.

Scroll down the page listed above for guidelines to send us messages and also to read the messages already posted.
THANK YOU!

Send a Thank You to Our Allies in Iraq

    Posted By Blackfive

If you are a regular here and want to send some of our allies in Iraq some support, send me an email At blackfive@gmail.com (Subject: Allies).

The allied soldiers are from Kazakhstan, Korea, Japan, Macedonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Albania, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. You can ask for an individual address from one of the countries listed above or a collective one to get to all of them. Along with the address, I'll include some tips for care packages for them. (A personal message of holiday spirit from us in America is all you need to send...although I know these guys love our college and professional sports teams).

    Thanks!

Manchu Zach Ashbaugh Room 460, Bed 2 Brooke Army Medical Center 3851 Roger Brooke Dr. Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234 ************************************************************************ A serious note from the President of Homefront Hugs USA,Inc. - from Alessandra Kellermann February 13, 2008 Dear Friends and all Americans who read this, I am concerned but still keeping the faith that we can find the support we need for our troops. We are now non-profit organization at Homefront Hugs USA - here since 9-11 and not political . All donations are tax-deductible but the economy is affecting the support for our greatest heroes. Forget politics for a moment and remember those who sacrifice daily away from home so we can vote freely here from all political affiliations, religions and cultures...we owe them our support. I am sending this out again as I just included a new letter we received this morning with more needs and another hospital just joined us. We need Americans and businesses to help us - to volunteer- to write personal cards- to adopt soldiers, or to help our wounded program Operation Healing Angel....our mail box is practically empty now that holidays are over ! Or you can just send money for postage so we can get these items below to the wounded in HOSPITALS IN IRAQ ! We just had another hospital sign up this morning and we will not say no- we can do this together...Morale and support are low and we need Americans to unite and help please ! Pass this on to anyone who wants to reach a wounded hero and their hero nurses and docs DIRECTLY ! The way to do it is through us...and you can hear the replies below... children, families and teachers....churches and synagogues...businesses and individuals...we need you. We needed you yesterday. God bless you all for at least passing the word...and to my close friends and family for reading another one of our newsletters and all your support....I know we are all busy but we must never be too busy for our wounded and our medical heroes who take care of them.... Alessandra Kellermann President and Founder of Homefront Hugs USA, Inc. A letter from the sandbox....and our main hospital no less: Homefront Hugs, Thank you very much for sending all of the wonderful care packages filled with coffee, snacks, and supportive letters. I want you to know that the troops here really appreciate it. We have many wounded that come through the hospital and I want you to know they receive the cards you make and the goods you send. Your support is appreciated and needed. Alessandra always leaves a note that says, "Let us know if you need anything." Thank you Homefront Hugs!!!! Very Respectfully, Kristina M. Decot, SrA, USAF Chaplain Assistant AFTH Chapel ( We also continue to get monthly thanks from Landstuhl Hospital ...in Germany and the and the James Haley VA in Tampa for our now 6 years of continued support !) ...and another request today so please send them here and we will forward on to the hospital asap (remember postage help is always appreciated as we need to keep the location secure so the address cannot be shared ): February 12, 2008 Alessandra, Ma'am thank you very much for all your support. We are looking forward to the coffee grinder!! Please know that it is very appreciated. We will get some pictures out to you as soon as possible :) As for the specific requests...here they go: Something we could use more of here at the hospital are supportive, encouraging cards or letters from home. We have received some homemade cards from the Brownie troops which are always wonderful, adds a personal touch and the guys love them. Also, in the last package we had received a NIV New Testament specifically for the Army, I was wondering if you all had any more of those? They had great prayers and encouraging words for our wounded Army soldiers. Many times the soldiers come through with just the clothes on their back and ask for bibles. If we could give those ones out specifically that would be awesome! A few more requests would be individually wrapped Slim Jims, Men and Women's magazines, phone cards, and crayons for our little Iraqi children that come through. Also, we are working on "sprucing" up our "coffee room". I was wondering if it would be possible to get some sort of small banner or poster that has the name of your organization on it and have all your volunteers sign their names with encouraging words..again this is just a thought and may be asking to much. We appreciate everything you do for us. Thank you for your love and allowing us to feel closer to home in a time of war. Thank you, Thank you, Thank You!!! Very Respectfully, Kristina Decot, SrA, USAF Chaplain Assistant Air Force Theatre Hospital Balad, Iraq Friends, Just got word from our hospital again in Iraq- so thrilled to hear from all of you....and they are loving the spoiling and the cards for their wounded and the docs and nurses ! Happy Valentine's Day to all ! Welcome to all our new members and new adoptees ! If you need adoption or wish to adopt....let us know ! We will not turn down anyone...we always manage to meet our goals because of the wonderful country we have ! Here is what we need: We have 39 packages that need to be covered in postage at 8.95 each ! We also have lots of wounded who need CARDS at all 7 hospitals now ! Send them with photos and cards and make them personal please....we need to make sure they feel loved every day and can picture who it is from...anything to help them feel you close and give them a hug from home. What is so exciting is that they will get your cards just as they got injured and it means so much....God bless you all. Get your children involved and their teachers please ! We need 200 bibles somehow. We need Slim Jims,Blow Pops Lollipops,Protein Bars Patriotic Decorations,St,Patricks and Easter Decor Beanie Babies,Paper and Crayons for the Iraqi Children who get hurt and are at the hospital !! You can also still adopt our rubber ducks to send over with a message on their belly ! 3 rubber ducks for $10 or 10 for $25 with your message and they are adored by young and old alike ! This is what they think caused his kidneys to go bad. Two years ago, went into a coma and when he finally cameout of it he was [permanently] paralyzed from the waist down. Now he is on dialysis either two or three days a week. Then, I learned yesterday that this dear man had a stroke Friday night and is currently in the hospital!!! It appears to be a mild stroke, but they are not sure yet what long-term damage there may be. We are waiting for more information. Please send a note or two to perk up this Hero's day... it would just mean so much to him and his wife!!! Cards may be sent to me at: Mama Kat Orr "FOR VETERAN N.C." Post Office Box 1660 Loganville GA 30052 I'll forward them on to him. This is a project I'd like to see on-going for a while, not necessarily a one-time shot. You can send individual cards, or if you'd like to have your kids color pictures or get a whole bunch together, that's cool also. But just one card from each person is fine, too. Captain Amazon (real name withheld for OPSEC) is an Army psychologist assigned to the 101st ABN DIV. She reports that some Soldiers assigned to the 101st are sleeping on hard surfaces with GI sleeping bags, because they are on the move too much to have regular cots or beds. As all of us who have slept on the ground in a GI sleeping bag can attest, it's not very comfortable! Captain Amazon requested the PGR to try to get donations of twin-sized egg-crate mattresses for the Soldiers to sleep on. Egg-crates are light, can be rolled up and stowed in a vehicle or strapped to a rucksack, and can be washed and dried for sanitation. An example of an egg-crate mattress ($9.99) may be seen at: http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2582250. Captain Amazon also requested donations of NEW light blankets and twin-sized sheets in the original packages. DO NOT SEND MONEY. I hope you can donate one of these comfort items. If you belong to another organization that can donate (American Legion, VFW, Rotary, Masons, etc.), please ask your compadres to help. Contact me at ksbigdog@embarqmail.com for Captain Amazon's mailing address. I'm sorry to make a pest of myself, but.... I got an email from my adopted soldiers' wife. A while back, she emailed folks, asking them to send a note or a card to her girls (ages 6 and 12) because, halfway thru daddy's deployment, they are feeling the strain and needed some extra luv. Out of the more than *50* people she emailed... only one person sent notes for the kids. [image: Shocked] Mrs. Soldier was pretty sad over the low response, but the girls were beyond thrilled at the fact that THEY GOT MAIL ALL FOR THEMSELVES!!! So... since only one person sent a card to them... I thought I'd ask folks to maybe send me an email of encouragement for my Soldier's daughters and for Mrs. Soldier..:computer: I'll get a bunch of them and snail-mail them to Mrs. Soldier and Soldier Girls. So...if anyone would like to send an email to me, a note of encouragement for these girls and Mrs. Soldier, please send me an email to JEFFSKAT@GMAIL.COM with "Hero Girls" in the subject line... I'll collect a bunch and send 'em via snailmail. It would really, really make their day to get a bit more mail.... OPERATION: LOVE FROM HOME

4TH OF JULY CARD DRIVE FOR DEPLOYED TROOPS
The Mission: To collect at least 5,000 "thank you" cards for troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The majority of the cards collected will go to a unit currently stationed in an extremely harsh and remote area of Afghanistan.
The Reason: Being away from home and living in harsh conditions with combat & constant danger is difficult ~ our troops need to know we have not forgotten them!!! Mail from home helps to keep our troops' morale strong, making a very real difference in their lives. It keeps them motivated and focused when they know we care about them!
The Address: Send your signed, unsealed thank-you cards to the following address:
    Mrs. Kathy Orr
    OPERATION: LOVE FROM HOME
    P.O. Box 1660
    Loganville, Georgia, 30052
ALL CARDS MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 2008.
    The Guidelines:
Ø The cards can be handmade or store-bought. This is a great opportunity to get your Scout troop, school, church and other civic organizations involved in doing something to show support for our troops.
Ø Please do not write the date on your cards
Ø Please, no glitter on the cards. Because of the intended destination of the cards, nothing "shiny" should be sent for safety & security reasons.
*IMPORTANT: This is not a "dating service." Please do not send suggestive or otherwise inappropriate cards or materials. Please also refrain from making political statements of any nature. We will be reading and screening every card received to ensure that the above guidelines are adhered to. Remember: This is strictly to let the troops know that we love them, we are proud of them and that we HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN them! If you have any questions, please contact us at LoveFromHome@Gmail.com or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LoveFromHome/

Even though I don’t know any of you I feel a great sense of respect towards all of you. Because of Americans like you is the reason I’ve been serving this country with honor and pride for the last 12 years and will continue to do so (as long as my body can take the beating! LOL). I have 6 deployments under my belt and this is my 7th and 3 tours out here in Iraq. I’m not complaining, I volunteered for every one of these assignments and I’ve been blessed with a great wife and understanding family! I love my job! I have a wife and three children of my own and I truly would like to see them grow up in a country as great as ours and I will do what is necessary to do my part in making that happen. For those of you with family members out here (Iraq/Afghanistan/or any other part of the world were they are serving) my heart and prayers are with you and them as well. I hope that you will continue to support them and assist them with letter and prayers for a Troop/Soldier those are the things that keep us going out here. I also pray that you may soon be reunited with that person, if that is the case, so that you may enjoy a great BBQ this summer with them! Remember folks, spoil them while you have them next to you ‘cause you never know when duty calls how long it’s going to call for! I know I’ll be spending most of mine eating at the “CHOW HALL”, but I hope to make the best out of my next Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas party!!! I would like to end this email with a heartily thank you and a great appreciation for your prayers and messages. May God bless you all and your families as well. Semper FI!!! Just wanted to drop you a note to update you on the status of our Operation Love From Home 2008 4th of July card drive for the troops. Sadly, we are still far, far short of our 5,000-card goal... we have in our possession slightly *less than 1,500 cards*. We've extended the deadline until *JUNE 14, 2008. * Please do all you can to help get the word out, and send in a card or two! :) Every single card/letter helps tremendously, and truly makes a very real difference! An empty P.O. Box means less 4th of July Thank You cards & letters going to our troops. :-( In other news, please check our our website (www.OperationLoveFromHome.org)! We've made some new additions as we fine-tune our site: - Send an "e-card" to the troops... fill out our online formwith your message to the troops; we will insert your messages into a "Thank you!" card and ship them over! Thank You Mamma Kat UPDATE #2 ********* Hey, everybody!I'm working for a GREAT cause, and we need YOUR help! As most of you know, I am with Operation Love From Home, a non-profit organization that collects holiday & thank you cards to send to our American soldiers serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries overseas. Our goal for our Fourth of July card drive was 5000 cards - we are now right at three thousand. We've got less than a week to come up with TWO THOUSAND more! You can help, and I'll even make it easy on you. :) Just go to our website - www.operationlovefromhome.org - and click on the tab that says "Send E-Card". Fill out the little form, and in less than 30 seconds, you can send a message! We will, in turn, print our your message and paste it inside a card - how easy is that? You can do one card, or a hundred - we need all the cards we can get! Our American soldiers are risking their lives for our freedom - don't we owe it to them to do what we can to bring them happiness and a little bit of home? PS - Please feel free to email this to EVERYONE you think might be interested in helping out! Thank you! Melissa Slocum Vice President, Operation Love From Home FINAL UPDATE ************ *Total cards gathered and shipped: **5,916 *(this number includes 330 cards that were shipped early, on June 2, to a remotely-stationed group of Marines with very slow mail delivery times!) Total Cost of Shipping Supplies: $60.33 Total Cost of actual shipping: $10.95 from early shipment on June 2 of 330 cards; today's shipping cost $241.19, *for a combined total shipping cost of $252.14* *Grand total of Supplies & Postage*: *$312.47* GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!! Pictures of packing party, etc., will be posted very soon on our website (once some technical difficulties have been resolved). Thank you all so much for your help and participation!!! YOU ROCK!!!!!!!! Kat PS - we received three huge mail tubs full of still more cards in the mail this morning. We will hold onto those cards for the next time! :-) Remember, we accept cards year-round, for *all* holidays, so never hesitate to send stuff! ************************************************************ Name Added 6/18/2008 RN414-045 PVT. I have 35 Soldiers in my command. They are living in very austere conditions. They do not have access to any Post Exchanges to but personal hygiene items of any snacks etc. No donations/care packages seem to make it down to us. They are on the front lines with the Afghan Army and Police. If you can send care packages addressed to me I will ensure that my guys receive them. In addition, the children here are extremely poor and lack basic necessities such as shoes, clothing and school supplies. Anything that you or any organizations /church that you belong to could donate would be of great help. Address any donations to me and I will ensure that they are distributed to my Soldiers and the Afghans. Thanks so much. *********************************************************************** Attachment “USAF” to: Care Packages for our servicemen and women serving in HARMS WAY (IRAQ/AFGHANISTAN) ---------------------------------------------------------------- AFGHANISTAN: USAF # 7 ( Retired USAF MSGT ) Contact: Fil Rechnitzer (rechnitp@aol.com) MPRI FOB TOMBSTONE APO, AE, 09355 Boxes mailed: 7/21/2008 T1084 from: The Folk’s back at home / Operation DVD 6/20/2008 CC20 from: The Folk’s back at home / Operation DVD And Starbucks Coffee Company.
