FROM A PROUD MOM
My computer crashes periodically and with it went your email address.  I have been looking for it for months and finally I got something from you.  So,  I quickly copied the address with the intention of emailing and could not remember specifically what I wanted to say.
Somehow I must have hit send instead of save.
Oh,  I know,  it was probably to tell you that my son finished AIT in satelite communication ion Sept.  He was home for 4 weeks and is currently in Fort Huachuca, AZ,  scheduled to deploy in April. 
Also,  if you would please send me your address,  I want to send something from the children.  Ever since the war began,  the chhildren opt for only stocking stuffers so that whatever we would have spent on other presents can be sent to our troops.  We used to do it from home but I figured we could reach more people with more gifts if we sent it to you.
Keep us all in your prayers.
Thanksgiving will be exactly 8 months since my beloved husband,  Father of my children,  went home to God.  I confess,  it is harder than ever.  Will was in the air force,  Korean War.    If any of the gifts can be sent ''in memory of Willis C. Allen",  that would be great.

Hi again!  You may remember that our five children are adopted.  Paul is the only one that does not have significant brain damage from pre natal alcohol exposure.  He has some damage but is still able to function.  He had a lot of emotional damage from being in and out of foster homes and all kinds of physical and emotional abuse until he came to us at age 10.
Anyway,  Because of the children's Fetal Alcohol Syndrome,  I have formed a strong support group via email with other parents of children with FAS.  Teresa Kellerman is one of them.  She lives in Tucson.  She met Paul's airplane in Tucson and took him out to eat and took him to Fort Huachuca.  Here is the video clip she sent me.
She will also be taking him home for Thanksgiving and we will be bringing home 6 Coast Guard recruits from the training center in Cape May.  We have done this every Thanksgiving and Christmas since 1994.  This was always such a joy to my husband and this will be the first year that he is not the one to pick them up and bring them home.

  There was some essay writing contest,  apparently sponsored by the VFW,  and my daughter's teacher had the entire class do it.  Last night she got a call from the VFW that she had won at the local level and it is now being sent to the county. 

Patriot’s Pen

If a patriot is one who loves his or her country then that is what you can call me. I am an American patriot for two reasons, 9/11 being on of them. What happened on 9/11 brought our country’s people closer together. For example, the passengers on United Flight 93, after learning their plane had been hijacked they united; together they forced the hijackers to crash the plane into a rural field in Somerset County in Pennsylvania, at ten in the morning. Those people acted bravely in the face of danger, putting aside all their differences they came together and saved the lives of others by giving their own. This opened my eyes and helped me become a better American patriot.

My family has also played an important part in my being an American patriot. I have five brothers, two are in the armed services, one of whom is scheduled to deploy in April one who is in a military school, and one who is in Civil Air Patrol. My oldest brother has tried to enlist in every branch of the military, but is unable to join because he is asthmatic. He has turned his patriotism to honoring our Veterans by volunteering at the Veterans home. My father served in the Korean War in the Air Force. He was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and American Legion until the day that he died. My great uncle served in World War II with the Army Air Corps. My mother has also helped become an American patriot, every Fourth of July I wake up to patriotic music. Beside all of this, every Christmas, since the war in Iraq began, my brothers and I, rather than receiving big gifts, have chosen to send packages to our troops. As you can see my family does play a ma jor part in my being an American patriot.

A patriot is a proud supporter and defender of his or her country and its way of life. This has been given to me by the example of my family. Through the tragedy of 9/11 and my brother’s pending deployment, a more complete understanding of what love of country could ask of me became clear. If a patriot is one who loves his or her country then that is what you can call me.

Freedom isn’t Free!

This edition of Messages from Home is our opportunity to say thank you. I hope you will enjoy the greetings and remembrances from your fellow Americans, and know that we haven’t forgotten the hard work you are doing, the sacrifices you are making, or the mission you are trying to accomplish. As far back as my minds journey goes ~ my family has proudly served. WWI Granddad & Grandpa too, WWII Uncle Chester, left on the beaches of Normandy. You may think that what you do is "just my job" and I've always looked at it from a different point of view. As the daughter of a career military man who retired after 20 years in 1961 I was able to live from Okinawa to Germany. My ex husband was with 3/2 ACR. His dad retired as a Col from the AF after 23 years who flew B-52's in WWII. Being raised a "brat" was wonderful, and the experiences made me realize how much we need to support you. Memorial Day has always been special to me, I grew up attending the Memorial Day parade in my hometown almost every year until we moved away. A few times I got to march in the parade with the American Legion Auxiliary and once I even got to carry the American flag and I remember how honored I felt to carry that flag. My arms ached so badly by the end of that parade route that I didn’t think I could hold on any longer, but I didn’t let go because even at a young age, I knew how much that flag meant. It was a symbol of freedom that thousands believed in so much that they gave their lives to defend it. I know some days this war feels like carrying that flag, I imagine you are probably hurting and tired, but at the same time proud and determined to accomplish the mission. Please know that you have my unconditional support and my eternal gratitude for what you are doing out there. God speed on your mission.

Dear Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, National Guard, Reservists, in
Iraq, in the Middle East theater, in Afghanistan, in the area near
Afghanistan, in any base anywhere in the world, and your families:

Let me tell you about why you guys own about 90 percent of the backbone in
the whole world right now and should be happy with yourselves and proud of
whom you are.

It was a dazzlingly hot day here in Rancho Mirage today. I did small errands
like going to the bank to pay my mortgage, finding a new bed at a price I
can afford, practicing driving with my new 5 wood, paying bills for about
two hours. I spoke for a long time to a woman who is going through a nasty
child custody fight. I got e-mails from a woman who was fired today from her
job for not paying attention. I read about multi-billion-dollar mergers in
Europe, Asia, and the Mideast I noticed how overweight I am, for the
millionth time. In other words, I did a lot of nothing.

Like every other American who is not in the armed forces family, I basically
just rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic in my trivial,
self-important, meaningless way.

Above all, I talked to a friend of more than forty-three years who told me
he thought his life had no meaning because all he did was count his money.
And, friends in the armed forces, this is the story of all of America today.
We are doing nothing but treading water while you guys carry on the life or
death struggle against worldwide militant Islamic terrorism. Our lives are
about nothing: paying bills, going to humdrum jobs, waiting until we can go
to sleep and then do it all again. Our most vivid issues are trivia compared
with what you do every day, every minute, every second.

Oprah Winfrey talks a lot about "meaning" in life. For her, "meaning" is
dieting and then having her photo on the cover of her magazine every single
month (surely a new world record for egomania ). This is not "meaning."

- Meaning is doing for others.

- Meaning is risking your life for hers.

- Meaning is putting your bodies and families' peace of mind on the line to
defeat some of the most evil, sick killers the world has ever known.

- Meaning is leaving the comfort of home to fight to make sure that there
still will be a home for your family and for your nation and for free men
and women everywhere.

Look, soldiers and Marines and sailors and airmen and Coast Guardsmen, there
are eight billion people in this world. The whole fate of this world turns
on what you people, 1.4 million, more or less, do every day. The fate of
mankind depends on what about 2/100 of one percent of the people in this
world do every day and you are those people. And joining you is every
policeman, fireman, and Emergency Medical Technician in the country, also
holding back the tide of chaos.

Do you know how important you are? Do you know how indispensable you are? Do
you know how humbly grateful any of us who has a head on his shoulders is to
you? Do you know that if you never do another thing in your lives, you will
always still be heroes? That we could live without Hollywood or Wall Street
or the NFL, but we cannot live for a week without you?

We are on our knees to you and we bless and pray for you every moment. And
Oprah Winfrey, if she were a size two, would not have one millionth of your
importance, and all of the Wall Street billionaires will never mean what the
least of you do, and if Barry Bonds hits hundreds of home runs it would not
mean as much as you going on one patrol or driving one truck to the Baghdad
airport.

You are everything to us, as we go through our little days, and you are in
the prayers of the nation and of every decent man and woman on the planet.
That's who you are and what you mean. I hope you know that.
